Maybe surgeon whites with a sword in hand?

Rick, good analogy on this and "Magnificent Obsession." Another Lloyd C. Douglas medical drama is Paramount's "Disputed Passage" (1939) with Dorothy Lamour and John Howard. I've never seen that one, but would like to. He was a very popular novelist in his time, and was well-served by the movie versions of his books. I always think of GREEN LIGHT and MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (the Rock version, of course!) as a pair of medical drama bookends.Classic Film and TV Cafehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09548537117263337339noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6189896360230007229.post-36491115665581069472012-11-12T12:20:28.590-08:002012-11-12T12:20:28.590-08:00Kevin, I forgot to mention -- this movie and Dive ...Kevin, I forgot to mention -- this movie and Dive Bomber gave us Flynn in surgeon whites -- sigh...
ClassicBeckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03591715859057540467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6189896360230007229.post-56528962141996531152012-11-12T09:50:30.943-08:002012-11-12T09:50:30.943-08:00I agree with ClassicBecky - Flynn's self-appra...I agree with ClassicBecky - Flynn's self-appraisal is refreshing.

Great post!Silver Screeningshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04955048716754142299noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6189896360230007229.post-62993488898436248942012-11-07T20:20:48.772-08:002012-11-07T20:20:48.772-08:00Jacqueline, my mind may be playing tricks on me, b...Jacqueline, my mind may be playing tricks on me, but it seems like the medical dramas of the 1930s look different from other eras. The whites in these films really glisten. I'm thinking of titles like M-G-M's "Men in White" and "Society Doctor." Even the black and white contrasts in the Dr. Kildare movies seem more prominent in the 1930s entries than the 1940s ones. At least, that's how I remember them.

Becky, "Footsteps in the Dark" is my favorite Flyhn comedy as well, even though it's an obvious attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Thin Man movies. I'm sorry the series never materialized.Kevin Deanyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07697597405552599370noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6189896360230007229.post-81449192600458598162012-11-07T16:52:58.651-08:002012-11-07T16:52:58.651-08:00Kevin, you mentioned that you were going to do &qu...Kevin, you mentioned that you were going to do "Green Light" and I've been anticipating! I had to laugh at The Great Flynn's honesty about his proclivity, or rather lack thereof, for self-sacrifice. He has a good point -- Green Light certainly stretches the bounds of even the most altruistic martyr! Your analysis is right on - it's strange, but I liked it -- maybe just because Flynn is in!

He was good in comedy. I didn't particularly like Four's a Crowd, but he was very good. My favorite of his comedies (too few) is Footsteps in the Dark. He did a wonderful job in that type of role. It's a shame Hollywood didn't allow him to do more like that. Really enjoyable article, Kevin!ClassicBeckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03591715859057540467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6189896360230007229.post-68588364500931935202012-11-07T14:35:39.590-08:002012-11-07T14:35:39.590-08:00"...the black and white photography really hi..."...the black and white photography really highlights the cold, white sterility of the operating room theaters. The whites in these sequences are often really, really white and make the hospitals seem like miracles palaces."

I like this. A neat thought, which will stay with me the next time I see a "doctor" film. I haven't seen "Green Light", but another turn as a doctor in "Dive Bomber" leaves one with the impression of a studious, thoughtful Flynn if not exactly sacrificing. Great post.

Jacqueline T. Lynchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11047941886908178350noreply@blogger.com
